It’s safe to say that expectations were running high for our first in person event and they reached sky high levels when our joint vice president Patrick Armstrong said:

‘This is one not to be missed! I was fortunate to participate in Corporate Snakes and Career Ladders at IABC World Conference 2018 in Montreal. It stands out as one of the best and most fun learning experiences of its kind throughout my career. Highly recommended!’.

With such high praise and expectations 20 IABC NSW attendees gathered together for our first in person event (nearly a year to the day that we last met in person) for Corporate snakes and career ladders.

Zora Artis, Australia’s leading Alignment Strategist, CEO of Artis Advisory, the Immediate Past Chair of the IABC Asia Pacific region, past director of the IABC global executive board, and Vice-Chair of the IABC World Conference 2021 hosted the session.

Zora is the Australian licensee of Corporate Snakes and Career Ladders and network partner Archetypical Worldwide – a creative learning and training business.

Divided up into teams we had some wonderful ice breakers; ‘what makes you smile?’, ‘what app would you build?’, ‘what language would you like to learn?’ before hearing that today we were taking on the role of ‘Carmen Spinoza’ Globocorp’s Communication Director, one of the virtual characters in our business simulation.

Across three rounds of high level business issues spanning promotions, newsletters, and strategy the 4 teams (LAB, High flyers, Jazz Club and TLK Ltd) worked together to help Carmen develop her career, build personal and organisational reputation and to make decisions that impact individual and corporate opportunities.

For example; the promotion simulation gave us a scenario where Carmen has just been promoted to the executive board. The CEO of the company asks Carmen to say a few words so do we:

A. Talk about our career journey.

B. Go into listening mode or

C. Talk about plans for the future.

Each option has outcomes and results, Carmen’s reputation with the board and company changes based on decisions and we make our way up the corporate snakes and career ladders board tentatively or quickly depending on the outcome.

The decisions informed our goals to help the Executive Team make the right choices via a series of communication challenges and uses the IABC global standard of communication as our guiding principle.

This was a highly engaging and sensational workshop whilst also being a great networking opportunity. We explored real-life high-level organisational dilemmas, began to understand our influencing style and the skills to be an effective strategic adviser.

The two hours flashed by giving us an insight into how the full or half day workshop would have developed to include practical activities of our own personal characteristics and to practice our leadership styles.

Learning through experience, having fun, and having a chance to reflect with others are the foundations of this workshop and pillars of this great design by the Archetypical team.

A workshop that truly lived up to those high expectations and fabulous testimonies. Some feedback from our participants included:

“Loved it! Apply knowledge and share info in a fun setting. Let’s do the whole workshop.”

“Great game. Very interactive and gave everyone the opportunity to get involved. Learned from other people’s opinions.”

Thank you Zora. Zora chose to donate her speaker gift to Dementia Australia.
