Why communications certification is important

For business communicators, professional certification can elevate your career and help keep your skills fresh and relevant. As a lifelong learner I have always enjoyed keeping myself on my toes, making myself accountable and challenging both my practical and theoretical skills. Sometimes, taking a step towards refreshed learning, or stealing time back for yourself can be hard to justify. Getting certified is not only rewarding,  but it can be an invigorating experience that reminds you why you do what you do, and the impact that perfectly executed communications has on the organisations you work with and your audiences.

Just as our operating environments change and flex around us, it’s vital that as communications professionals we continue to demonstrate our knowledge and expertise. Learning can revitalise your passion and keep you current. Certification could also help you progress your career development.

The GCCC® was created by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) to offer certification at various levels and to promote a common, global understanding of what constitutes professionalism and competence in communication. It is independent of IABC and this status reflects the GCCC’s understanding of the importance of impartiality in conducting its certification activities, managing conflict of interest, and ensuring the objectivity of its certification activities.

There are two options

Communication Management Professional (CMP®) — For generalist, specialist and other business communicators established in their careers as managers and looking to demonstrate their competence. Learn more

Strategic Communication Management Professional (SCMP®) — For highly skilled business communicators practiced in providing strategic communication advice. Learn more

As much as I love adult learning, it can be a lonely experience, which is why we’re setting up a GCCC study group this May, with the end bonus of taking an online exam in June along with your fellow study group members and bringing some EOFY joy!

What are the details?

The group consists of 6 one hour sessions designed to support those who would like assistance through the process, like me, and will be run by APAC Certification Director Chris Saxby and me. I’m planning on taking the exam too and would love to have some other members join me for moral support.

The study group is open to any IABC (Australia-wide) and APAC region members.

Weekly drop-in sessions will be starting on Thursday 1 May, at 6:00pm each week, for 6 weeks. They are designed to take you through the exam process, from registering, tips for studying and taking the exam.

The one hour sessions are not compulsory to be able to take the online exam, but help us in the process and it is an opportunity to network with other globally based communications professionals.

How to register

Please complete our short expression of interest form so we can accommodate you. If you have any questions please email us, we know some of you have already expressed an interest and me or one of the IABC Board will reach out to you with the details.

In the meantime, if you are thinking of taking the CMP or SCMP exam or taking part in the support sessions please reach out via LinkedIn and let me know. I’m keen to get feedback on the start time and we’re open to suggestions on the exact day of the week and kick-off time, keeping in mind we’ll have colleagues from across the APAC region joining us.
